Kiefer Sutherland walks into a bar....

" "24" is the ONLY series, as many of you know, that I will watch...no "Gray's Anatomy", no "Lost", no "Rock of Love" for me...just "24"...why? Because the acting is superior, the topics are thought-provoking, and the storyline is addictive...every time the episode ends you almost subconsciously mutter "dammit" under your breath (pun intended for those who watch the show). Let me take you back to the night of Deanna (my Buyer's) birthday in the beginning of August. Low-key and un-pretentious get together with a bunch of friends at Brass Monkey bar just west of the meatpacking district. Matt and I arrived with our friend Renee to see that everyone had already arrived (I have a problem with being fashionably late). Within minutes of saying hi to everyone, Asha, another Buyer in our department, asked me "Did you see who was outside?"...she claimed that Kiefer Sutherland was sitting at the picnic tables outdoors along the sidewalk in front of the bar by himself. In total disbelief, I decided to "oh so casually" walk out front and make a cell phone call. Sure enough, that was, in fact, Kiefer Sutherland, sitting all alone, drinking scotch at a picnic table. I walk back inside, and do what comes to mind first, buy him a Bud Light (I'm thinking this will open a conversation about being from Texas). I take a deep breath in and march right outside and plant myself at the now empty picnic table previously occupied by Kiefer Sutherland. Joined quickly by two of Deanna's friends from Florida (one of which who lives here now--Yay Patty!) We start a hurried conversation about where he might have gone and what I was going to say to him. He returns, and with more courage than I had trying out for the school play in junior high, I turned around and said, "Hi, I got this for you (pushes beer across table), I really enjoy "24"" (This is where I did a mental punch in my own face for sounding like a high school teenage fan). And you know what he says? "I really appreciate that, but I don't drink beer" to which I say "That's okay, I'll drink it" (Punch in my own face part II). Either way, with the other two girls, and eventually Matt and Renee, I ended up having one of the most interesting and varied conversations I have ever had with anyone, much less an award-winning TV and Film Star. Attached are some of the highlights:

Me: "One of my favorite movies growing up was "3 Musketeers" Kiefer: "Wow, you are young aren't you? *laugh*"

Me: "What is your favorite work you have done so far?" Kiefer: "I haven't made it yet"

On his daughter majoring in journalism: "The news media is (controlled by mega corporations)...there is no such thing as accurate reporting anymore"

On Ironworks, his new music studio: "(I've always enjoyed independent sound)--that is why I am down here, to visit my daughter and to listen to a new band we are going to sign who are doing a live show"


It was nearly 2 hours later that we decided to leave, but not before Kiefer bought an entire bundle of roses that were offered to him by a street vendor, and gave them to me and the other girls at the table.


Kiefer Sutherland is an fantastic actor and, more importantly, activist, with whom I had an amazing discussion....thank you, Kiefer....you're an amazing person--I learned a lot from our dialogue, and will not ever forget getting to meet you."
